Picta Travel

Travelling was not popular in Roman times. Most people in the Empire traveled because they had to or because they were on a religious journey to a sacred destination. Written documents called "itinerarias" were established to aid those who needed to go from one location to another. They were guides that depicted the key elements along the consular highways such as roads, places of rest, crossroads, as well as the distances between places. In these documents, travelers had maps, known as the " itineraria picta " (painted itineraries), which illustrated geographical maps with representations of cities, roads, land, rivers, mountains, and the sea.

Embracing the art and character of the ancient itinerarias, Picta Travel is the contemporary guide for those travelers that want to discover and experience places that are full of stories and history in Portugal. We believe traveling is the key to understand the world, reach out to new cultures, make new connections and shift your perspective through the unexpected. We organize trips for those who want to venture into the unknown and are eager to become immersed in the wealth of experiences that are unique to each destination.
