Porto Walking Tour

One of the oldest European centers and proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996, Porto is a labyrinth of narrow cobbled streets, ancients houses and a lot of character. In Portuguese, the name of the city includes a definite article: o Porto (“the port”) which is where its former English name “Oporto” comes from. One of Portugal’s most famous exports, the Port wine, is named after the city, given that it was in this area were the packaging, transport, and export of fortifies wine was made.

On this three (3) hour walking tour in Porto you will have the opportunity to learn about the history of this city with a professional guide by your side. You will also learn about the Arab and Castilian invasions that Porto suffered, without forgetting about the French invasion. You will also visit its historic center, as well as the cathedral and its baroque churches.

You will have enough time to take many pictures through all the stops, without forgetting points of interest such as Avenida dos Aliados and the monument to King Pedro IV, as well as its striking Dom Luis I bridge, the emblematic iron bridge of Porto that was designed by a disciple of the French civil engineer Gustave Eiffel.

  • Porto Cathedral

Porto Cathedral is located in the heart of the historic center and is one of the oldest monuments in Portugal.

  • The Dom Luis I Bridge

The Dom Luis I Bridge, built between 1881 and 1888 to communicate both cities (Porto and Maia), is an icon of the city.

  • São Bento Train Station

Known for its beautiful tiles, the São Bento train station was built in 1916. Designed by the Portuguese architect José Marques da Silva, it connects the Minho and Douro Valley railway lines.

  • Café Majestic

Considered in 2011 as the sixth most beautiful coffee shop in the world, it is definitely a worthwhile stop. Once you see its wooden crafts, mirrors and chandeliers you will understand why.

 
  • Livraria Lello

Considered one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, this bookstore was where J.K. Rowling got her inspiration for the Hogwarts stairs in the Harry Potter books.

  • Torre dos Clérigos

The Clérigos tower and the church are symbols of 18th century architecture. Designed by the architect Nicolau Nasoni, both buildings are Baroque style and were listed as national monuments in 1910.

  • Ribeira neighborhood

One of the oldest areas of the city, located along the River, this is another place in the city declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
