Jewish Lisbon

This tour is an invitation for people interested in going back in time and understand what was the Jewish presence in Lisbon in the 15th and 16th century. This visit will reveal the details of what happened in Lisbon in those three dark days of April 1506 and disclose details of a missing and forgotten city by recreating the spaces connected to the city's Jewish memories: squares, churches, streets, and neighborhoods.

Itinerary

From 1496 onwards, Jews who wanted to remain in the country had to convert to Christianity,
many by force. The Jewish community in Lisbon contributed significantly to the country's wealth
and contributed greatly to the overseas expansion of the Portuguese empire around the world.

Who were Lisbon’s Jews? Where and how did they live? What Jewish heritage has survived to
this day?

In this visit of approximately three (3) hours, you will walk around and visit important sites such
as Igreja de São Domingos, Rua da Prata, Igreja da Madalena, Sé and Alfama. Our professional guide, considered an expert in Jewish history in Portugal, will take you back in time and tell you
all about Jewish history in this country. You won’t hear the History, you will feel the story.
